Reviews of our film : FINDERS KEEPERS

This is some of our audience reviews on our film. We have received mainly positive reviews especially the fact that there's moral (message at the end of the film about finders keepers). Few of audience suggested if we were meant to film again in future there should be voice-over but when we explained why we didn't want voice-over , our audience understood and commented that usually in comedy film there's always voice-over but for film it's actually unique and interesting as we tried to portray comedy and drama genre with facial expressions.
Overall a positive start to our filming :)

Evaluation of my editing skills

Overall I think I did quite well on my editing part. However even though I did most of the editing I have learnt different editing skills from Sammah such as adding certain effects ( creating blurry images, fading etc). The first day for my editing was an nervous day for me because I had never edited and I was instructed to start editing our first few scenes in the film.  I felt I needed more help and so I decided to ask one of the mentor to help and teach me some of the techniques. As obvious I didn't learn it in the first day but it took me one week to be confident enough to edit.

My friend Genevia has helped me a lot in becoming expert with editing in filming. Whenever she used to go editing I used to observe and wrote down notes on to which technique, effects or ways she would use for her film. My partner sammah also helped me in giving me ideas about the use of effects we could use in our film and hence I allowed Sammah to do the effect part for editing. My journey throughout my editing has been excellent as I have learnt different skills and gained knowledge about editing more than I needed to know. One of my skills that has improved within my editing journey is my time management skills this is because we had one day to edit and I had only 6 hours to finish my editing as well as adding soundtracks . I divided my free time and how much I should spend on each section . For instance for the park location I finished the editing within 1 hour as for the other locations such as Oxford street it took me 30 minute. And for most of the scenes me and sammah edited together but adding few soundtrack sammah did this part and then when I came I edited by how long and how should the music play within certain scenes. 

In order to know more about the effects I could use for my filming during my break time I had , I used it effectively to learn more about editing by myself. Such as I played around with adjusting the lighting and colour correction, by doing this I could have added different shade tints to the film. But then we wanted to keep our film simple and elegant without adding too many effects even though its a comedy genre film. when It came to editing soundtracks before I had to downloaded it, the first few sites I used to convert it to MP3 didn't work so I had to search for another. Downloading into MP3 was bit of risky for me as some down-loaders website had virus and I it took me an hour to search fora safe website to download. 

When I’d downloaded it I listed them in orders so I can show it to my partner sammah and get her agreement. so it was long process  dragging & editing, to the audio bar and then re-rendered it. . I found this process for a few moments quite stressful as I had to keep renaming scenes ,adding new scenes and changing them again with the old scenes etc. However I am happy with the final outcome. As a result I felt  I've learnt to time scale my work better and now have skills and experience in film final pro . Sometime I felt I should make it more professional standard but then our film timing was short and I realised If I had more time ton shoot I would shoot some few scenes to polish the editing further. 

As I'm experienced with editing for films(I'm comfortable with the different types of editing tools) I could help people who need advices or help them editing.So overall I believe I did well for my editing part which gave our film a good impression and this is evidenced by our audience as there will be reviews of audiences. 

Editing part 10 adding soundtrack

Due to the timing I had left to edit  the whole film I forgot take pictures of me editing the soundtrack and which soundtrack I have used. on the other hand these are some of the soundtrack I have used. the night before editing I searched over quite a lot of soundtrack to see which one matches our film. Out of all the soundtrack I have used silent hill , pop instrumental beat sad and comedy music. There are other which I have used but I have lost the pictures of it.

This is my evidence for searching variety of soundtrack. It took me 3 hours to chose the ones I need and it was actually difficult because all the soundtrack were great but it wasn't easy to identify soundtrack that goes along the whole scenes. I didn't want to add different types of soundtrack at each different scene so I decided to download 4 piece of soundtrack which are listed above. 

Editing part 9: Adding effects

This is the scene of precious going to shopping : This scene was too long so we speeded up the scene timing up to 150%.This is because even though we tried to shoot through different types of camera angles and use of different shots, it would create a bit of different effect to the film rather than cutting the scene to make it shorter and showing her walk slowly which wouldn't entertain our audience.

This is where I've added new bus stop scene . The reason for that is due to the timing of precious falling on the banana is quite short so through playing with the scenes around, by adding this scene quickly after she falls it would make sense that the bus leaves just after she slips on the banana. 

This is a new scene: In the story precious goes to shopping but we don't show her buying anything. But we can't have her coming to the park second day with nothing on her hand: we shot her going inside the park in second day with a bag to leave a hint for the audience that maybe she did spend the money on her shopping. I have speeded up the scene to 120% due to the timing of our film.  Our short film went over the minium time for it : it was 6 minutes. So I had to speed up the last scenes of her going into the park and coming out of the park. One scene where you see slow motion effect being introduced is the scene of her finding the envelope threatening her . One of our mentor told us that it's too quick to read the letter as we during our shooting we forgot to make the scene of her reading the letter for 5minute. Although we managed it by slowing up the scene. 

After all the scenes were added the soundtracks were then placed. I forgot to take pictures of me editing and putting the soundtrack however I have pictures of the types of soundtrack we have used. 

Editing part 8

  

 

 

This is our final editing 12:50 to 3:00

As you can see new scenes are still being edit. We have separated the old scenes from our editing part but a problem we have faced is that because we filmed few scenes more than twice it became hard for us to identify which scene is the perfect one and in order to look for the neatest and perfect scenes we had to remove the new scenes from the editing part and re-start everything from the beginning. This took us quite long time ( 1 hour 30 min). After that we replaced the new scenes from the start and then we added the old scenes which we need. At 2:00 we planned to finish adding soundtrack but due to our timing for the editing , we will start adding the soundtrack from 3:10. 

Editing part 7 (1st december)

9:00 to 11:40 : For today's editing I'm sorting out the  all the new scenes we shot. For e.g one of our improvement was to add expressions to imply the bad luck and in this image you can see her upset facial expression ( this is when she goes to the park).In order to improve all our scenes we did one scene more than ones so for certain shots we did like 10 times to make it perfect but some of the scenes are quite long and so we thought to change the speed of her (precious) walking towards the park.

As Sammah did most of the filming I have decided to do the editing part mainly. But however Sammah should also do editing as well as during our filming I have filmed some scenes of Essex road south  and Abbott's park. 

Evaluation of our filming

First of all we were put into a group of 2 due to the lack of people in our class for filming.  So me and Sammah teamed up and we had to produce storyboards and mind maps of genre we’d like to do and what our idea was. Once we had  agreed on the our chosen genre, we then had to produce the script but then we decided its better to do without script as we want to portray our film with facial expressions and emotions.After that we then had a group discussion to see if I and sammah felt anything should be added to our storyboard and our ideas. After changing parts of the story such as the ending, we wrote up the final storyboard. Later on in the group we had to assign ourselves job roles. Me and sammah did equally all roles except at the end we decided to separate our roles so sammah did most of the filming but for locations such as Essex road south and Park scene I did most of the scenes.I was editor at the end and sammah was the camera operator.

We faced a few problems when filming, such as the camera lens wasn't focused enough which then led to some shots being blurry. This had a negative impact on our filming as while filming we didn't realise that the lenses weren't clear enough and when we watched our film we couldn't understand. But this problem was sorted when our mentor gave us 1 day to re-shoot as she didn't like some of the parts of the scene. Plus  because members of the group were off often (actress) on filming days it went difficult for us to finish our filming within our specific dates and due to my partner absence( she was ill) I was unable to film without her because the storyboard was with her and I had a late reply from her about when can reschedule our shooting . we had a few problems with the camera shots using too many mid shot or long shots or  cutting out the actors heads, however in the end our hard working  had made it worked well. 

I wasn't experienced with DSLR camera before hence I was really  anxious about me shooting alone and whenever I filmed I kept panicking inside that I might not be still. This issue occurred when i was shooting for the banana scene I had to shoot film rest of the Essex road south location by myself with the actress but then when I did the mistake for not being still with the camera, I learned more about the camera and I got into the grips with using the camera, so it was only the end I felt more relaxed. However if I didn't committed any mistake for our filming then I wouldn't have the experienced needed for a film-maker  then I did before. 

If I was to improve anything it would be making sure that whatever work we do we should have copies of each of our work and its better to have someone  you know for to act as our timing and our actress timing most of the time didn't match. which was a hassle for us since we were running out of time. If I had one more person then I would have made or added more changes to our film to fit our film into the genre of comedy and drama.  But to the bright aspect since it was only 2 of us we had more control on our filming which made it easier for us to control which shots we want and want to miss out. Plus my partner agreed with most of my ideas; if I had 2 more people things could have hard for us to settle and agree on. When it came to continuity, I think it worked out quite well as every time we filmed.

 Another problem we did faced  was the weather changes as one day it would be dry and then the other it would be raining. And this made it complicated for us to shoot our last location which was Oxford street : we wanted bright sunny day to imply and create the feeling of  happiness and enjoyable . when I was free my partner and actress wasn't free so hence Sammah and our actress finished the last shooting of the location without as I didn't had any breaks on that day.

I have enjoyed my filming with my team members. I would say we have worked well along with each other and we learned from each other such as our actress was more experienced with the camera since she did photography as a subject. This honestly aided us when none of us were able to fix the lense or not making it blurry.

Final shooting part 2

Today we are going to do the final shooting part 1 of Abbotts park and Essex road south.

My partner Sammah has finished filming on oxford street. Hence in order to improve and make our film perfect we decided to re-do some of the scenes again. 

Ideas for our film: Improvements suggestions

 These are some of the ideas which I have wrote down. All these ideas are about new scenes which we could add. Out of all these ideas the main scenes we picked
were mainly for Esssex road south:

1. One idea was to re-shoot the scene of precious walking clumsy and slowly to imply  the bad luck day she's having before she misses the bus.

1. Add a scene of either a person annoying such as talking to precious even though she doesn't want to talk to anyone. / someone farting next to her.

1. Add a scene of her going next to the bus stop after missing the bus .

1. Out of all these we decided to use the scene of someone farting next to her and then adding another person coming next to her sitting down but then that person think precious is the one who farted.For that scene me and Sammah will act. So when it's my turn to act Sammah will film and when it's Sammah's turn to act I will film. Then we will add the scene of her walking away from the bus stop and going towards the park.

Abbotts Park

1. Re-shoot the scene of precious before going inside the park: add expressions (close up medium shot)

1. Re-shoot the scene of her finding the letter and when she gets up her skirt gets ripped( medium shot)

1. Add a scene of someone looking at precious (2nd day visit to park) when she starts leaving the park (point of view shot)

1. Shoot a scene from behind her when she touches the gate and looks back to see if anyone is following her.

Another scene we want to add is precious looking at the shops especially of her looking at clothes model and then  film her (close up)taking out the envelope from her jacket. Then she starts smiling and walks off. 

Our main target for our shooting is 

• Get out the expressions : emphasise certain facial expression to demonstrate how much bad luck she's having.
• Add more comedy element and drama at the end.
• Do a scene of her looking at her phone and seeing a text from a charity saying thank you to her for her donation
• Try to emphasise comedy element in the first few scenes.

Suggestions for our final shooting

This video is about how and what we should and could include in our film to make it better. One of the main improvement is to add comedy genre element as in to make it more comedy at the start of the film.  As well as to emphasise the character's facial expression and emotion to make it look like how much the character within the film is hating her day since she's having a  bad unlucky day.Other improvements were adding element of day dreaming or voice over for e.g she could day dream about spending money on her new clothes.

Sammah and Fahmi's view: Our film is comedy and drama genre and we understand the fact that we need to add comedy element more but at the same time we also want to add drama genre element. As our film has a moral at the end of the film it wouldn't be suitable to add too many comedy scenes. In terms of facial expressions, this is one of our biggest improvement and hence we will add new scenes to make it more funny in particular scenes such as when the character in the film misses her bus we could add more comedy scenes in that particular scene.  And we don't want to add voice over because our film is based on the facial expressions and we believe that since we are going to add new scenes it would add the comedy element within our film. At the end of the day we want the actress to portray our feelings of anger, frustration etc through her expressions and that's what makes our film unique.
