Evaluation question 2
Written version
Q2 )Our 3 products work together well as a media
package since all the media products in a way share similar components but
however we have some few differences as we tried to subvert forms and
conventions of our media product. The film magazine review and the film have
similar elements whereas the film poster is totally different from the film
magazine review.
One of the
ways 3 of our media product share similar component is the bright tone and
background used in all of the media products. For instance our film was filmed
in the daylight, the film magazine review has bright white page for the
background and the film poster has high bright light. The fonts and colour
scheme are similar in our print product for film poster I have used aerial and
I bold it to make it stand out in the background. For the film magazine review
Sammah has used same font but she left it without bolding it in order to create
simple font effect. Therefore we have reinforced some forms and conventions for
film magazine review and film poster in terms of fonts both print products both
which allow the audience to identify the genres differences (comedy &
drama). The images used are 2 different
set of image with different costume colour but with same costume design. For
e.g. in the film we see precious wearing maroon jumper and black skirt , the
use of same colour costumes are same in the film magazine review and in the
video but for the film poster we see Precious wearing but with a dark blue colour. This is because the day
when we did our photo shoots that same maroon jumper was in wash and we only
had that day to do our photo shoot so hence we told precious to wear dark
colour jumper to create a dark connotation of the image. Yet we have kept the
hairstyle same in order to match with the film magazine review.
The film
review also helps to create the drama genre of suspense and this is through the
image we used: the still shot used in the film review gives cues to the
audience about the turning point and twist in the story but like the film
poster we have hidden the comedy genre but used the font colour to represent
the comedy element. Medium shots have been used for the images used in the film
magazine review and the film poster. Therefore altogether the images combine
well to work together as a media package since the film poster connotes a dark
sinister tone whereas the film poster ironically shows the bright side of
Precious life but the journalism text talks about something else. So the
combination of these products will entice the excitement of the audience to
watch the film because the film magazine review portrays the comedy genre using
bright white background, black and red font colour scheme ( black and red are
usually used in combination of drama and comedy films). While the film poster
portrays both comedy genre through the use of text colour and font and the
image representation serious nervous facial expression expresses the drama
genre. As a result we have challenged forms and conventions by not using the
same colour scheme and image in the film poster and film magazine review but
this is due to build a more tension and entice the audience into the watching
the film since it will definitely question the audience about the differences
in both print products. More importantly we want to leave the comedy genre as a
surprise for the audience since even though our film genre is comedy and drama genre,
our main focus was the moral part and so we mainly used the drama suspense
element to attract and fascinate the audience to watch our film.
The
housestyle for the film poster and film review is in journalistic language but
for the film review we left an exclamation mark to create an intrigue mood for
the audience. Likewise for the poster I have tried create the same effect by
writing it in a different way, both texts link and talk luck but in a
different. This makes it more thought-provoking about why the texts are
different and what do they mean? This will help to invite and engage our
audience to read the film magazine review.
For the
film poster we don’t have any prop to signify the iconography but the iconic
objects was mainly demonstrated in the film review where the first main images
shows Precious holding the envelope which also an iconic object in our film
since as at first it’s a magic charm but then it turns inauspicious for her.
Yet we could also argue that the iconography is the character within her life,
because in the film we see her donating the money to a charity but then in the
story we forget that unfortunate bad luck charm is Precious herself and the envelope
came as a double trouble unlucky ominous
object for her. She tried to repent it by donating it to charity but it
still didn’t work out! So the envelope came as lucky charm for her but bad luck
will never leave her. Our iconography
idea links to Roland Barthes action codes: the character facial expression in
the film poster gives information of precious being a bad luck charm and this
is supported by the tagline “nothing ever happens like you image it will” it
almost indicates the fortunate ( yellow colour) and unfortunate luck of being
‘finders keepers’( navy blue). For the
film poster and film magazine since I have used similar medium shot it also
links with the idea of iconography since it helps to create the bad luck that’s
associated with her which is the envelope in the film magazine review and the
dark colour costume which she wore representing her bad luck charm.
Overall our
media texts operate well for advertising and promotional artifact this is
because each media product is unique in presenting to the target audience in a
different and intuitive way. The film poster promotes the film through the
combination of drama and comedy genre and the film magazine portrays it through
drama genre. The film poster is distinctive in its way and so does the film
review but altogether they work together well to identify the genre for the
audience and the work out the hint. Plus different colour palettes /schemes
being used, different layouts, but similar font style to keep the consistency
and combination of both different genres for all of the media products.
If we were
to extend our media package we can follow contemporary examples such as having
a trailer, film poster in the billboard etc. The first way we would do it is
doing cross media promotion by having a fan page, social networking sites such
a twitter, instragram and Facebook (As these 3 social networking sites are
still famous in terms of famous social network sites,). This would allow our
audience to be up to date with our film news, premier, new clips and having
competitions to encourage and gain more audience views about the film. We would
post the film poster in tube stations due its heavy crowd, bus stop billboards,
newspapers, YouTube, instragram and tumbler: all these will help us to sell our
media package since we will be able to engage more audience and thus relating
to real life package. Trailers will be posted in Instragram, YouTube first and
Facebook. This will help us to attract young audience as well. The film
magazine review would be sold in heat, empire, variety and sight and sound (
International magazine) and best short film of the week website ( the website
is popular for its short films displays) magazine as they are the most popular
magazines in terms of attracting audiences from 15+ onwards.
For the
real life package comparison I have used similar codes and conventions from the
film poster such as using reviews from certain magazines or having the actress
name with the film main title. I have reinforced the codes and conventions for
the film poster as I want the film poster to look professional and elegant. For
the film magazine review we didn’t use much forms and conventions however some
of the magazine has inspired us to do the opposite of the codes and conventions
such as rather than using different colour for the pull quotes we used black
and it’s above the main texts. Only the tagline colour is different from the
main title. But this poster has inspired us a lot as we tried to implemented
some codes & conventions from it and therefore we have tried to keep the
film magazine simple yet elegant with its simplicity. So our print products
package does relates to real life packages but we have subverted forms &
conventions in order to make it distinctive and different since our film is a
combination of drama and comedy genre nevertheless with a beautiful moral
message the end.

Film poster font design
This is how I want the main title of our film poster to look like. I couldn't do it in photoshop but I chose in paint software to design the font as it made it easier for me to draw the circles the way I wanted.

Film poster : photoshop continuity
For the film poster main title , I wanted the title to be surrounded by circle . The title is highlighted by the circle to show its importance. Its by circle because I want to portray the feeling that there's no way out from this issue: finders keepers. When you take/find something of someone you are now responsible for to keep it safe but for precious it was the opposite. And in our film for precious there's no way out to come out from the danger at the end.

Update of our print product work
For today's lesson I have helped sammah on deciding the the layout of the film magazine review as both of us were confused with our different ideas for the layout so we decided to stick to our initial ideas: we took few codes and conventions from each of our ideas.
I have started working on photoshop for film poster. But however I'm struggling to choose which image to use as we took for e.g one shot more than once in order to create the perfect picture.
But both of us have made a start on our work and we will finish our work by tuesday.
As you can see sammah has already started working on where should be the pull quotes, main title, headline, images.
This is the overall layout of our film magazin review
